2 weeks ago I emptied my wardrobe. Knowing that for the next fortnight all I would be wearing were various combinations of a core 15-piece capsule. Having taken out more than 70 items, after I returned the mere 15 hangers I was both shocked and daunted in equal measure. I was shocked at how few things were hanging in front of me (also at how much space there now was in my wardrobe) and daunted at the prospect of only wearing these items in the coming days. I felt like I had bitten… but I like a challenge.
The term capsule wardrobe was actually coined in the 70s by Susie Faux. However, it has returned with a vengeance in recent years and exponents such as Gok having been pumping it into our fashion mantras throughout the teens. Its about having the essentials, those things that don’t date or go out of fashion. And interestingly I think this challenge has taught me a lot about style and how some fashions are timeless.
Yes these core items are augmented with seasonal pieces and accessorized for the occasion. Why did I take on such a challenge? My business is decluttering and as I talk to more people about decluttering their wardrobe and letting go of clothes they no longer wear, I started to research capsule wardrobes.
